Love it or hate it, Valentine’s Day will rolls around every year so why not take the day to show someone you care about them.

Below are some beautifully simplistic ideas that may help speak your partners love language without cluttering the world with more ‘stuff’ or breaking the bank. Haven’t heard of the 5 love languages? You can read more about it here if you are interested.

It’s the simple things that matter

Everyone has chores that need to be done regularly. We might completely loathe them, or we might just regard them with apathy, knowing that it’s just part of life’s routine. But boy, we sure don’t miss doing them when we are on holidays. What are the items on your loved one’s to do list that they could do without? Is it walking the dog so he doesn’t pee on the rug, or making a packed lunch when you just can’t creatively come up with anything new? What about doing that 10th load of laundry for the week or mowing the lawn when you swore it was trimmed to perfection just last week? Think about what item, or items, you could take off your partner’s list. Even if it was for just one day to make their load a little lighter.

It’s not about you

What does your love one like doing? Do they have a favourite band that you could buy tickets for an upcoming concert? Maybe create a playlist of all their greatest hits and learn the words to belt out a tune? A sporting team that you could go along to and show your mutual support for? Wear their team colours and learn the supporter chants? A play or theatre show you think your amore would really enjoy the story of, even if it’s not exactly our thing? The point is to show an interest in what your partner enjoys. To show that even if you have no desire to do it every weekend, you’ll make an effort to show you understand their passions.

Nom Nom Nom

Food might be the way to a man’s heart, but I tell you, I’m pretty impartial to having some fine cuisine (that I didn’t have to cook myself) in my belly too.  Breakfast in bed is an oldie but a goodie. The thought of not having to move from a place of blissful slumber in order to have your morning coffee or smoothie. To have a plate of deliciousness brought to you whilst relaxing against plump pillows. No need to stay at a 5 star resort in order to enjoy room service!  Chowing down in the bedroom not your Valentine’s thing? How about cooking them a lunch or dinner of all their favourite dishes? Who cares if the meal consists of finger food or a 3 courses of just desert. It’s all about showing your partner that you made the meal all about them. That you’ve paid attention to what their favourite foods are. Can’t cook? Here’s a fantastic caterer that will have all your needs covered!

Have an adventure

Valentine’s Day can be a great excuse to get out of the house and try something new.  Something that both of you have never done before.  A great chance to create new memories together.  Ever taken a date to the roller derby?  Couple of drinks and a bag of popcorn and you’ve got yourself some pretty cool dinner party conversation for the future.  Horse back riding?  Maybe you tired it as a kid, but it can be a great way to spend some time together, out in nature, enjoying some exercise.

Or just stay home…

Romance doesn’t have to be pigeon holed into just flowers and champagne. I’m not saying don’t buy them, but why not let them be an added bonus to something you’ve put a lot of effort and heart and soul into.  Instead of a e-card this year, how about going old school with a little out pouring of emotion into a love letter?  Words not your thing?  What about setting up the room with some candles and soft music and offering a massage without expecting one in return? Not good with your hands? Leave the room the same but amp up the music and get those hips grooving.  Perhaps you could even put on a solo performance… Girls love a man who can move with confidence!
