So, what is mulled wine and where did it come from?
Mulled wine firstly originated in the 2nd century and was created by the Romans who would heat their wine and defend their bodies against the cold and harsh winters. As the Romans conquered much of Europe throughout the next century, their love for mulled wine spread across their empire and the regions they traded with. It soon grew in popularity throughout the middle ages. Europeans would mix heated wine with their accumulated spices because they believed it would promote health and aid in avoiding sickness. The use of herbs and flowers acted as natural sweeteners to make the unpalatable wines taste much nicer.
For Sweden, Mulled wine is where its popularity increased. Claret (Rhen wine, sugar, honey, and spices) and Lutendrank (various spices, wine, and milk) were just two of the variations that the Swedish monarchy made famous over the coming centuries. More and more alternatives developed over time and recipe books started using the name glogg, but it’s the 1890’s when it first became associated with Christmas. Over time, companies were beginning to distribute it all over and were sold in unique bottles (some say they depicted Santa Clause) uprooting the forgotten roman wine in a new festive light. Over the next several decades, mulled wine has been enjoyed by many countries creating their own unique blends and enjoying when winter falls.
To this day, mulled wine continues to be a Christmas tradition.
Warm-up your Australian winter and create yourself this aromatic mulled wine and enjoy by the outside fire with your loved ones. It’s a fav recipe of ours!
