Here at Mask Events we are often in our own happy bubble of planning events all day long.
Chatting amongst ourselves and throwing new ideas and thoughts around. We often forget when talking to our clients that they don’t live in our world of events and sometimes don’t know the definition of some of the words we are using. Oops our bad!
Here is a list of some of the top event words that we have been asked to ‘please explain’.
Act of God – An extraordinary natural disaster including, but not limited to, inclement weather; such as rain, wind, flood, fire, earthquake or cyclone, that could not be reasonably foreseen or prevented and of which we have no reasonable control. Such an act would make the performance of our contract impossible, impracticable and a danger to our staff and members of the public. We therefore have no legal responsibility to continue with the performance of our contract. That said, we will always try to find an alternative way to deliver the very best event possible.
AV – Audio Visual event equipment used in the production of sound and visual presentations. For example – projectors, lighting, sound engineering.
AV Technician – Staff employed by an AV company with technical skills to install and produce AV presentations.
Bomboniere – (an Italian term meaning favours). These are small inexpensive gifts provided by the bride and groom to each of their guests at a wedding to say thank you for attending. They can be used as a keepsake to remember the night and the wedding date.
Bump in and Bump out – The set times agreed upon with the venue and client for the set up and pack down of the event.
Cabaret Style Seating – Where guests are seated around a table leaving a gap in seating closest to the stage. This ensures that no guests have their backs to the front of the room.
Creative Consultation – This is a complimentary meeting, often held in the Mask Events showroom, to walk our clients through all of the ideas for their event. This can be a brainstorming session with all parties involved or simply for our clients to view the largest range of styling items on the Sunshine Coast.
Damask – Damask is a weaving technique that originated in the early Middle Ages near Damascus which is the capital of Syria. See below for an example of the pattern. We often use this pattern in table cloths and table runners.
Floor plan – A drawing of the layout of a room including entrances, windows, and the placement of furniture and additional styling items.
Force Majeure – (a French term meaning ‘superior force’) – See Act of God.
Full Onsite Event Management – Once our experienced staff have planned all the finer details of your event, they can be present for the day and/or evening. This will prove you with peace of mind that on the occasion that the unexpected was to happen, our staff are complete professionals at responding quickly, quietly, responsibility and with creative flair!
Gala Dinner – An exclusive formal event on the social calendar often with an expensive ticketed price to attend. These events are likely to be with the aim to raise money for charity or to celebrate the end of a successful conference. Entertainment and speeches often accompany a set down dinner.
Gobo – A laser cut piece of metal that is placed over a spot light to create a pattern or message that can be projected onto a wall or dance floor.
PAX – The number of people attending the event that need to be catered for.
Proposal – A document produced in response to a client enquiry, listing all of the requirements specified by the client and the cost associated with Mask Events providing these items.
Site Inspection – Often when working with speciality items, or in a new venue, a physical visit to the venue is required before the event by our staff to ensure all of the client’s needs are met on time and on budget.
Uplighting – Ambient lighting that comes in a wide range of colours, used to create a mood within an event. Often used against walls or to highlight a particular styling item in the room.
